Climbing Ethics – Blagaj Climbing Area

Climb hard, tread lightly, respect deeply.

The Blagaj climbing area is more than bolts in rock — it’s a living blend of nature, history, and community. The cliffs here rise above centuries-old paths, endangered plant habitats, and a vibrant village life. Every climber who visits becomes a temporary caretaker.

To keep Blagaj open, safe, and beautiful for generations to come, we ask you to follow these simple principles:

1. Respect the Rock

  • Climb on established, equipped routes only.
  • Do not chip, glue, or modify holds. The routes here are the product of years of volunteer work — treat them as heritage.
  • Avoid climbing when the rock is wet to prevent damage to the limestone.
  • Brush and blow: Always remove your chalk marks, or tick marks after you are finished with a route

2. Protect Nature

  • Stay on marked approach trails — off-trail wandering damages fragile vegetation.
  • Never remove plants or disturb wildlife, especially in spring nesting season.
  • Avoid loud music or shouting — you’re sharing the canyon with birds, animals, and other climbers.
  • Avoid using strong light sources to climb in the dark: Some animals only start their day(night) then 🙂

3. Waste is Your Responsibility

  • Leave no trace — pack out all trash, including tape and cigarette butts.
  • Toilets are available in the village; if nature calls in the wild, do it far from water sources and bury waste properly.
  • If you find litter, be a hero: pick it up.

4. Respect the Local Community

  • Dress and behave considerately in and around the village — you’re a guest in someone’s home.
  • Do not block roads, private driveways, or farm paths when parking. Use designated parking spots only.
  • Support local businesses — they are part of the reason climbing is welcomed here.

5. Safety & Infrastructure

  • The Via Ferrata “Vulin Potok” and bolted routes are maintained by volunteers — use them at your own risk.
  • Always use proper climbing equipment and techniques.
  • If you notice damaged bolts or fixed gear, inform Sport Climbing Club Blagaj.

6. Give Back

This climbing area exists because of countless volunteer hours. If you enjoy climbing here:

  • Join a local cleanup or bolting day.
  • Make a donation to help maintain routes, trails, and shelters.
  • Share your skills — teach newcomers safe and respectful climbing.

Final Word

Every climb you make in Blagaj leaves two marks: one on the route log, and one on the land. Let’s make sure the second one is invisible.

Climb with care, leave only your heart.
